A Hero within our Midst

Rizal died for our country. He fought gave his life just to help us filipinos, when he could have lived a simple life. But, in our generation, are there heroes like Rizal?  We often think that there are no more Filipino heroes unlike Rizal's time and it's impossible to be one. But in fact, they are all around us. Sometimes, we just have to look closer and realize their acts.

Dr. Roel Cagape is a barrio doctor born in Baragay Lanao, General Santos. A typical doctor usually medicates and heals sick people at hospitals, but Roel did much much more. In General Santos, Mindanao, Roel started helping the local people by providing free medical services at rural and far-flung areas to mountainous regions.  He prioritized those who cannot afford it. Although he was not that known through out the country, he was able to help so much Filipinos. He also had a project called "Ambulansyang Kabayo" which was to teach the community to transport patients using horses. Due to his acts, he was honored with a "Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Filipino Awards" medal which was given to  Filipinos who did an extraordinary deed.  Roel could have worked in urban places to surely have a successful life, but he decided to live with his people and make a change just like Rizal.

Roel, a doctor who instead dedicated his life to give medical services specifically to those who can't afford it, sacrificed so much just for his countrymen.  He had the passion and dedication to do more than what he is expected to do, and his perseverance and love for our country made him who he is now. Maybe it's our time to do the same. We are called to live out the life of a patron. A simple man like Roel proves that it is not impossible to be a hero. We just have to stay strong and keep pursuing just like Roel, doctor, missionary, hero.

One for All, All for One.
